According to the UNICEF, air pollution claims more children’s lives than malaria and HIV/AIDS combined.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said that air pollution claims more lives of children than malaria and Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) combined.
Thus, the UNICF is calling on world leaders to reduce air pollution to save the lives of the children.
According to UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said that around 600,000 children below five years old die from diseases caused by or exacerbated by outdoor and indoor pollution, especially in poor nations.
Lake made his statement in the introduction to a report titled, “Clear the Air for Children”.
Lake said, air pollution also hurts the children it does not kill, including the unborn.
“Pollutants don’t only harm children’s developing lungs, they can actually cross the blood-brain barrier and permanently damage their developing brains, and, thus, their futures. No society can afford to ignore air pollution”.
