The win in the 42nd edition of the World Chess Olympiad is the first gold medal of the USA in the said tournament.
The United States of America or USA grabbed its first ever gold medal in the World Chess Olympiad in four decades after being declared champion in the 42nd edition held at Baku, Azerbaijan.
Team USA last championed the tournament in 1976 in Israel, when powerhouse teams Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations boycotted the Olympiad.
Team USA’s ambition to grab the gold was almost derailed when Ukraine almost won in the 11th and last round.
The American woodpushers defeated Canada with a score 2.5-1.5 while Ukraine slammed Slovenia with a score 3.5-0.5.
The scores went down to tie-breaks but in the end, the Team USA (seeded No. 2) got the win with a very little margin.
The crowd favorite and seeded No. 1 Russia only got the bronze medal and surrendered the crown to Team USA after so many years of owning the throne.
