Lopez: “A mine in between two protected areas? That’s crazy.”

DENR Secretary Gina Lopez aired out the protective measures done for the environment.

LOPEZ – The Secretary of Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Gina Lopez, aired out concerns on the mining activities done in certain areas of the Philippines.

Like the other government agencies which are on the pursuit to make a ‘change’ for better services to the country and the citizenry, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is also on its way to level up its protective duties to the natural resources and the environment.

Reported in Inquirer just today, the Secretary of the said government agency, Gina Lopez, expressed her desire to push for the revisiting of the 1995 Philippine Mining Act which she sees as treasonous.

The move to revisit the said law for mining in the country rooted from the statement of Joel Tabora, Jesuit priest and president of Ateneo de Davao University, who stressed out that the Constitution bears that the minerals are owned by the country – owned by the Filipino citizenry.

Recently, the Claver Minerals Development Corp.’s operation was stopped as certain laws with regards to environmental protection were violated by the said mining company. It is located in the province of Surigao del Norte.
