A group with an environmental advocacy warned the government that the reactivation of the Bataan Nuclear Plant entails unbearable costs.
An environmental advocate group warned President Rodrigo Duterte of the “unbearable” environmental and monetary costs of the reactivation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.
According to the Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment, the initial $1 billion cost of rehabilitation and reactivation, estimated by the Department of Energy (DOE), is just a decimal as compared to the state of nuclear waste and management technology and many other physical and technical risks surrounding the 621-megawatt nuclear power plant in Morong, Bataan.
Kalikasan PNE National Coordinator Clemente Bautista said in a statement: “We rebuke and deplore President Duterte’s approval of the proposed BNPP rehab under the false premise of Secretary Cusi that the security and safety of the BNPP will be ensured”.
Bautista said that while they recognize the consistent concern of the President of the safety risks of the BNPP, the project is replete with proven geological, indrastructural, and environmental risks “that will likely entail unbearable costs”.
Kalikasan PNE added that the reactivation of the nuclear plant’s cost will ultimately be paid by the massive risks with billions in wasted money of the taxpayers, or worse, with their lives.
