Senate To Launch New Probe On Extrajudicial Killings Following Espinosa’s Death

Senator Gordon said that they have closed the previous Senate investigation on EJKs and so the Senate has to launch a new probe on Espinosa’s death.

Senator Richard Gordon is planning to call for another Senate investigation of the killing of Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. inside his jail cell by policemen on early Saturday morning.

Senator Gordon, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, shrugged off the calls that he resume hearings on extrajudicial killings, which closed lat October after members protested that the inquiry had turned into an investigation into activities of a purported squad when the President was still mayor of Davao City.

Senator Gordon said: “We will have to conduct a separate investigation of this case because we have wrapped up the previous investigation and the committee report is ready for submission”.

Senate investigation on Espinosa's death
A separate investigation will be conducted following Mayor Espinosa’s death.

Senator Panfilo Lacson previously said that he would ask Senator Gordon to launch an investigation regarding the death of Espinosa which for him is a clear case of extrajudicial execution (EJK).

He also said that credibility of the Philippine National Police (PNP) is now being challenged following the killing of Espinosa, given that there is a distorted picture out of the statement of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
