The Department of Health (DOH) recommends to the Malacañang Palace that vapes and electronic cigarettes (e-cig) be included in the public smoking ban that the Duterte administration plans to impose.
The recommendation of the DOH is aimed toward fortifying the campaign of the government against smoking.
According to DOH spokesperson Enrique “Eric” Tayag, e-cig and vapes are not included in the prohibitions of the Republic Act 9211, otherwise known as the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, but these are included in the proposed executive order for the smoking ban of the agency.
Tayag said that there are proofs or evidences that smoking e-cig and vapes are also threats to human health and therefore, they should also be included in the ban.
Tayag emphasized that just like the traditional cigarettes sold in variety stores, these devices also contain nicotine and other substances harmful to human health.
The DOH spokesman noted that while e-cig and vapes are being sold as tools to quit smoking, these actually encourage smoking.
