Type 1: This type of diabetes is not linked to
being overweight, but the cells in our body that produce insulin are damaged for unknown reasons. It cannot be prevented and no lifestyle can reduce the risk of type 1 diabetes.
Type 2: This type of diabetes is within our genes and lifestyle. It can be prevented or reduce the risk by having a good lifestyle.
Many people having a high-level blood glucose (sugar) above normal range but not too high to be diagnosed as having diabetes are called pre-diabetes. They have a high risk of having diabetes if they don’t make steps to prevent it.
Obese people with body mass index (BMI) of 25 or above are high risk in diabetes. So maybe some of you ask how can we reduce the risk of having type 2 diabetes?
Some of the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes such as age or family history can’t be changed, but others can.
We can reduce our risk of having type 2 diabetes by:
1. Check your family history to determine if you are at risk.
2. Reduce taking of high sugar foods.
3. Eat a balanced and a healthy diet.
4. Limit eating processed foods that are usually high in salt.
5. Manage your weight.
6. Exercise regularly
7. Control your blood pressure.
8. See your doctor for regular check-ups.
Doing these things above can help us monitor our health status regarding this illness. Having a good lifestyle including eating the right food, having a daily exercise and regular check-ups can help us to reduce our risk of having diabetes.
