On the 3rd of October, 2023, a special day for Nanay Teresa P. Española, a woman honored and celebrated by the nation. Despite her age of 103 years old, her vitality and strength still thrive, and she has received accolades from the government.
Nanay Teresa hails from Purok Paglaum, Brgy. Bagumbayan Valladolid Negros Occidental, and throughout her long life, she has witnessed the changes and events in the country. But today, she took center stage in receiving her long-awaited prize as a centenarian.
According to Republic Act 10868, also known as the “CENTENARIANS ACT OF 2016,” signed into law on June 23, 2016, all Filipinos who reach the age of 100 and above, whether in the Philippines or abroad, have the right to receive a congratulatory letter from the President of the Philippines and a “centenarian gift” worth Php 100,000. This is a recognition of their long life and contribution to society.
Nanay Teresa had the opportunity to receive two special honors. First, from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) – Regional Office VI, where she was granted Php 100,000.00 as a centenarian. This amount will be an addition to her livelihood and needs. Municipal Mayor Enrique Miravalles, Senior Citizens President Rolando Gremio, and several DSWD officials presented her with the certificate and money, and Nanay Teresa shed tears of joy and gratitude. According to her child, the money is meant for her elderly mother’s necessities.
Secondly, Nanay Teresa received a congratulatory letter from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. This letter acknowledges and expresses gratitude from the highest official in the country for her remarkable achievement in reaching this age and continuing to inspire others.
In the midst of the pandemic and health challenges, Nanay Teresa continued to demonstrate strength and determination. Her life is a testament to hope, love for family, and community cooperation. With her centenarian award and letter from the president, her story has become an inspiration to many.
