Police to Implement Liquor Ban for Bar Exams This November

Liquor ban will be imposed around University of Santo Tomas during four Sundays of November for the bar exams.

Manila Police District has announced the implementation of a liquor ban around the University of Santo Tomas (UST) on the four Sundays of November.

This aims to beef up the security measures around the campus for the examinations of the future lawyers.

The 2016 bar examinations will be held on Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the España campus of UST.

Police Senior Superintendent Joel Coronel, MPD Director, said they will prohibit the sale, use, or distribution of liquors within 100 meters of examination venue.

“That liquor ban takes effect the night before the bar exams and until the midnight the following day,” Coronel said.

“This is to prevent previous occasions where there are members of fraternities, organizations, and other associations who will be drinking along the streets during the exam,” he added.

According to him, the MPD would deploy policemen to the whole perimeter of UST, including Espana Avenue, Lacson, Dapitan, and P. Noval.

“We will be deploying round-the-clock patrol and police visibility in the area, especially on the first Sunday where we expect a lot of people will be proceeding to the area,” Coronel said.

The westbound side of Espana Avenue will also be closed to vehicular traffic in the morning and afternoon on November 6, 13, 20, and 27, to give way to the examinees who will enter the university.

Manila City Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada has also ordered the police district to beef up security measures at the UST ahead of the bar examinations.

“We will utilize all our available law enforcement and protective units to ensure the orderly and peaceful conduct of the (bar) examinations. We can’t let any untoward incidents to happen again,” Estrada said.

The security preparations are meant to prevent any untoward incident to happen such as the one in September 2010, where 42 persons were injured after a grenade explosion outside De La Salle University on Taft Avenue.

Two law graduates had suffered leg amputation following the incident.
