In a short period, two consecutive earthquakes have instilled fear in various parts of Mindanao. The latest earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.0, originated 231 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, and 005 kilometers northeast of Lingig, Surigao Del Sur.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or Phivolcs, there are no expected aftershocks from this event, and no damages are anticipated. This is good news for residents who had previously experienced anxiety after the stronger earthquake on December 2, 2023, with a magnitude of 7.4.
The intense earthquake on December 2 struck the coastline of the province, once again causing unusual fear and concern among the people of Mindanao. Since then, various aftershocks and additional seismic activities have been felt, heightening concerns about the area’s safety.
Despite the region’s history of earthquakes, Phivolcs reassures the public that there are no signs of impending aftershocks from the latest 4.0 magnitude earthquake. Furthermore, the agency does not anticipate significant damage from this tremor.
The role of Phivolcs in providing information and warnings to the public about natural disasters, especially earthquakes, is crucial. Through their studies and monitoring, they proactively identify potential dangers and provide recommendations for the safety of the citizens.
Although fear may be felt after consecutive earthquakes, preparedness and adherence to authorities’ guidance are essential. With the help of experts and community cooperation, residents can overcome the challenges posed by natural disasters.
