Google confirmed that the Chrome update is at fault for a strange reported wave of unbootable Macs. Chrome’s update starts to cause issues by corrupting the OS folder in which prevented those impacted from being able to log in to macOS.
Reports of issues first became visible on September 24 when Bleeping Computer stated that Avid video editors “have started reported that when they shut down their Macs, they will no longer boot up.” According to Variety, this issue was also affecting film editors who have Avid Media Creator installed.
In a Google Chrome open bug post, it said that this issue is causing the /var symlink to be removed due to a bug in Google’s new software updater, codenamed Google Keystone.
How to resolve this problem regarding Chrome update on your Mac?
“We recently discovered that a Chrome update may have shipped with a bug that damages the file system on macOS machines with System Integrity Protection (SIP) disabled, including machines that do not support SIP,” Google said in a post. Google temporarily halted the release while they “finalize a new update that addresses the problem.“
If you have not taken steps to disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) and your computer is on OS X 10.11 or later, this issue cannot affect you, the blog post continued.
“To recover a machine that has been affected by this bug, please boot into recovery mode, and then from the ‘Utilities’ menu, open the Terminal application,” Google added.
Google also posted commands that a Mac user can use in their blog post.
“Then reboot. This will remove the affected version of Google Software Update, then restore the damaged portion of the file system,” Google concluded.
According to Sean Wright, a security researcher, this bug issue “highlights the need for companies to thoroughly test their new releases.” He also pointed out that this issue “does not help with the push to encourage people to regularly update their software.“
