In a statement released by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders said that Sundar Pichai, the current CEO of Google, may also be taking on a role as the next chief executive of Alphabet.

Going forward, Sundar will be the CEO of both Google and Alphabet,” Page and Brin said in a statement. “He will be the executive responsible and accountable for leading Google, and managing Alphabet’s investment in our portfolio of Other Bets.

In 2015, Page and Brin announced the formation of its new structure wherein the Alphabet manages various bets and companies, and Google may remain as the project’s flagship and money maker, including Waymo, Wing, and Verily, among others.

After four years, Page and Brin simplified their management structure as they see Alphabet as a “well-established” company, while Google and Other Bets were “operating effectively as independent companies“.

We’ve never been ones to hold on to management roles when we think there’s a better way to run the company,” founders said. “And Alphabet and Google no longer need two CEOs and a President.

In their statement, Page and Brin also praise Sundar’s “humility and a deep passion for technology to our users, partners and our employees every day.

He’s worked closely with us for 15 years, through the formation of Alphabet, as CEO of Google, and a member of the Alphabet Board of Directors. He shares our confidence in the value of the Alphabet structure, and the ability it provides us to tackle big challenges through technology,” Page and Brin said. “There is no one that we have relied on more since Alphabet was founded, and no better person to lead Google and Alphabet into the future.

Sundar Pichai clarified that the transition may not affect the parent company’s structure or its day-to-day activities. He also said that he will still focus more on Google.

I’m excited about Alphabet and its long term focus on tackling big challenges through technology,” Sundar said.
