Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake Strikes Banda Sea
BANDA SEA EARTHQUAKE – An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 hit the Banda Sea off Indonesia on Friday.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the intensity was revised upward from the previously recorded magnitude 6.8. Along with this, the quake had a depth of 640 km or around 398 miles. Meanwhile, previous estimations of the quake were at magnitude 6.6.
However, authorities from the monitoring service, Tsunami Service Provider Indonesia said it wasn’t strong enough to generate tsunamis in the region. Meanwhile, two days ago, there were also two earthquakes reported just minutes apart.
According to an article from Philnews, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a twin earthquake that struck 6 minutes from each other from 5:23 am. However, the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System reported that there was “no threat to countries in the Indian Ocean”. Luckily, the USGS added that there was a “low likelihood of casualties and damage”.
Areas along the Southeast Asian archipelago experience frequent seismic and volcanic activity. This is attributed to their position near the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. Among the places near to the Pacific Ring of Fire is the Philippines which experienced a strong 6.5 magnitude quake.
