AFP Chief Brawner Calls on Troops to Stay Professional and Loyal

Amid ongoing political unrest, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. called on military personnel to maintain professionalism and uphold their constitutional duty. Speaking at the launch of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women at Camp Aguinaldo yesterday, Brawner urged soldiers to remain steadfast in their commitment to the Constitution and the chain of command, emphasizing the importance of loyalty to the country and its democratic institutions.

“In the past days, we have seen a myriad of events that transpired in our country, shaking the political environment. As soldiers, we should not be shaken by this,” Brawner stated. He reiterated that the AFP’s mandate is clear: defend the Constitution and adhere to the principles of non-partisanship and professionalism.

Denouncing Disinformation

Brawner also addressed online claims alleging troop mobilization by the AFP in response to recent political developments, branding them as false and misleading. “Such disinformation only serves to create unnecessary panic and confusion,” the AFP said in a statement.

Brawner assured the public that the AFP remains focused on its duties, rejecting any attempts to undermine its integrity or democratic institutions. “We call for calm and resolve, and for everyone to hold on to our values of respect and nationalism that will guide us in these trying times,” he added.

Alleged Assassination Plot Sparks Controversy

The political landscape took a contentious turn when Vice President Sara Duterte, in a virtual press briefing, claimed she was the target of an assassination plot. She further alleged that she had instructed a member of her security team to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez if the plot succeeded.

These explosive allegations prompted swift responses from government bodies. The National Security Council (NSC) emphasized that any threat to the President’s life constitutes a significant national security concern. NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya underscored the potential consequences of such threats, including political instability and the undermining of democratic institutions.

“The safety of the President is crucial to maintaining continuity in government, ensuring national security, and upholding the rule of law,” Malaya stated. He described the President as a symbol of the nation’s democratic values and aspirations, arguing that any threat to his life must be taken with the utmost seriousness.

Duterte’s Statements Criticized

Vice President Duterte, however, criticized the NSC’s remarks, accusing the agency of taking her statements out of context. National Security Adviser Eduardo Año defended the NSC’s stance, reiterating that threats to the President are always treated with gravity. “The NSC considers all threats to the President of the Philippines as serious,” Año stated on Sunday.

Malaya also urged a non-partisan approach, asking the public to await the results of the investigation by law enforcement and security agencies.

AFP’s Commitment to Unity

In his public address, Brawner called on the military to remain unified and non-partisan. “We are loyal to our country, our flag, and the Constitution. We must not be confused. Our mandate is very clear,” he asserted.

Brawner’s leadership message aims to reinforce the AFP’s role as a cornerstone of stability amid rising tensions. “We face greater challenges that require the strength of a united country and armed forces,” he said, emphasizing the need to resist efforts to sow division.

As political and security concerns persist, the AFP’s commitment to professionalism and the rule of law remains a critical pillar for national stability.
