A viral video featuring Alfonzo Alvarez, the eldest son of Congressman Pantaleon Diaz Alvarez, has sparked widespread attention online after he exposed a sprawling 20-hectare mansion allegedly constructed by his father for his girlfriend, Jean Maliwanag.
The mansion sits atop a mountain, boasting a zigzag road leading to its peak, reportedly reminiscent of the steep ascent to Baguio City. According to Alfonzo, the estate was built using only the finest materials. Jean Maliwanag reportedly takes pride in the mansion’s imported windows, sourced all the way from Thailand.
Surrounding the mansion is a massive concrete wall covering the entire 20-hectare property, adding to its grandeur and exclusivity. Controversy also surrounds the private road connecting the mansion to the main road. It is said that Congressman Alvarez personally instructed the contractor to build this road directly to his mansion, ensuring the road ends exclusively within the estate.
Alfonzo clarified that neither he, his siblings, nor their mother has any connection to this vast property. He revealed that each sibling owns their own home and has never lived in the mansion. This statement seemingly distances the family from any direct involvement in the mansion’s ownership or use.
The eldest Alvarez son also questioned how his father, a congressman without any known business ventures, was able to amass such a multimillion-peso property. He further claimed that Congressman Alvarez owns multiple other properties, particularly in Siargao, including beachfront lands, as well as properties in Samal and Davao City.
Most of these properties are alleged to have been acquired during Alvarez’s term as Speaker of the House, with the combined value reaching billions of pesos. These assets are reportedly registered under various dummy corporations, a practice often associated with hiding ownership.
Pantaleon Diaz Alvarez, born January 10, 1958, is a prominent Filipino lawyer and politician currently serving as the Representative of Davao del Norte’s 1st district. He was Speaker of the House from 2016 to 2018 and also served as Secretary of Transportation and Communications under President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
A close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Alvarez has been a key proponent of shifting the Philippines to a federal form of government, originally supporting an independent Mindanao before backing Duterte’s vision of a federal Philippines.
