Alice Guo’s Sisters Shiela and Cassandra Ong were Detained in Indonesia

On Thursday, August 22, 2024, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. confirmed the detention of Shiela Guo, the sister of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, and Cassandra Ong, an authorized representative of a raided Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hub in Porac, Pampanga. The two were apprehended in Indonesia under circumstances that are currently under investigation.

In an ambush interview, Abalos disclosed the identities of the detainees and highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to coordinate with international authorities regarding the case. “Pinapa-check ko pa ito… what is important ay even sa ibang bansa through our police attaché ay kino-coordinate. It only shows na talagang seryoso rito ang kapulisyahan,” Abalos stated, emphasizing the seriousness with which the police are handling the situation.

The circumstances leading to the arrest of Guo and Ong remain unclear, with authorities in both the Philippines and Indonesia yet to release detailed information. However, Abalos assured the public that thorough checks and verifications were being conducted to ascertain the facts surrounding their detention. He also noted that the PNP’s international coordination efforts underscore the seriousness of their commitment to pursuing justice, even beyond Philippine borders.

The arrest of Shiela Guo and Cassandra Ong comes in the wake of ongoing investigations into the operations of POGO hubs in the Philippines, particularly in Pampanga, where authorities have conducted several raids. These raids have led to the discovery of illegal activities linked to the POGO industry, including human trafficking, illegal detention, and other criminal enterprises.

Mayor Alice Guo, Shiela’s sister, was dismissed from her post earlier this year following allegations of misconduct and involvement in illegal activities. Her dismissal was part of a broader crackdown on local officials linked to criminal operations, including those tied to the POGO industry.

The DILG and PNP are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, Abalos urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities related to the POGO industry or other illegal enterprises. The ongoing international cooperation, as demonstrated by this recent arrest, signifies a strong stance against criminal activities that extend beyond the Philippines’ borders.
