The Philippine Association of Meat Processors, Inc. (PAMPI) said Thursday that the group was “seriously checking” reports on three unnamed pork products allegedly tested for African Swine Fever (ASF).
According to Rex Agarrado, spokesperson of PAMPI, the group only received information about three brands of hotdog, longganisa, and tocino that were positive for African Swine Fever from hog raisers and reporters, and not from the authorities.
“We are seriously checking kung ano ito (what this is),” Agarrado told DZMM. “Unfair nga po, very unfair ‘pag walang brand na ime-mention kasi lahat tatamaan. Sa totoo lang hindi kami maka-respond. Wala kaming hawak [na impormasyon],“
(It’s very unfair if no specific brand is being mentioned because everyone will be affected. To be honest, we can’t respond because we don’t have any information about it.)
“Let’s respect each other, kami po ang bigyan ninyo [ng impormasyon], kami po ang apektado,” Agarrado said as he appealed to the Bureau Of Animal Industry. (Give us information about this, we’re the ones who are affected here.)
ASF caused hemorrhagic fever among pigs that may lead them to death, yet this cannot be transferred to humans or on other animals.
According to the Deparment of Agriculture, the Philippines became the world’s 8th biggest pork producers by volume that was estimated at PHP 260 billion on its swine industry.
