LA CASTELLANA, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL—Under the leadership of Barangay Captain Bon Sacapaño, Barangay Cabagnaan ensured the care and feeding of abandoned dogs after a forced evacuation was implemented by the local government unit (LGU) due to Mount Kanlaon’s ongoing unrest.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) had warned the public about the possibility of a major eruption at any time. This prompted residents to leave their homes, often unable to bring their pets, including dogs.
The situation escalated on December 9, 2024, when Mount Kanlaon erupted at around 3 PM. The eruption resulted in a thick ashfall that affected several areas near the volcano. Following this, residents from surrounding communities were moved to evacuation centers in various towns across Negros Occidental.
Despite the volcano’s continuing activity, Barangay Cabagnaan took proactive measures to care for the dogs left behind in their homes. The barangay officials demonstrated compassion for the animals, ensuring they were fed and cared for even as their owners remained in evacuation centers.
As Mount Kanlaon’s abnormal activity persists, government agencies have also reminded the public of the potential dangers of lahar flows, particularly with the threat of an approaching low-pressure area (LPA). PHIVOLCS continues to closely monitor the volcano to ensure preparedness in case of a more destructive eruption.
Currently, there is no definitive timeline or clear indication of when Mount Kanlaon might erupt again. However, many are hoping that any future eruption will not cause widespread damage, not only to the local population but also to the animals in the area, including those in protected zones near the volcano.
Hope remains strong for the safety and protection of pets and wildlife amidst these challenging times. The actions of Barangay Cabagnaan exemplify a commendable commitment to compassion and care for all living beings, even in the face of disaster.
