BIR Officer in Zamboanga City Charged with Robbery-Extortion Arrested
Police authorities arrested a Bureau of Internal Revenues (BIR) officer in Zamboanga City over robbery-extortion charges.
A female BIR revenue officer is facing robbery with extortion accusations as well as three additional complaints. This comes after she was discovered extorting P1 million from a local businesswoman.
Director of the National Bureau of Investigation-9 (NBI-9) Atty. Revenue Officer IV Flora Sarao Albao was named as the suspect by Moises Tamayo. Albao is also accused of breaking the Tax Reform Act of 1997, the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees, in addition to extortion.
Albao was nabbed on Friday during an entrapment operation by NBI-9 officers within the Bureau of Internal Revenue district office in Zamboanga City, according to the report. The culprit reportedly targeted a bakery owner as a victim.
Albao allegedly wanted P1 million from the businesswoman because she owed the BIR P30 million in taxes, according to Tamayo. According to Tamayo, the suspect offered to assist the trader by lowering the tax if she gave her P1 million.
The entrapment operation was carried out inside the BIR office by NBI agents wearing body cameras. Following the suspect’s transaction with the businesswoman, authorities confiscated P500,000 from her possessions.
