In the largest gathering of devotees, approximately 1.3 million people flocked to the Quirino Grandstand in Manila to participate in the procession of the Black Nazarene on Tuesday, January 9. The return of the procession after a three-year wait was eagerly anticipated.
The Misa Mayor at the Quirino Grandstand reportedly drew a crowd of around 175,000 devotees. Before 5 a.m., the official procession commenced from the Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church, where devotees awaited the return of the Black Nazarene to its home.
In videos uploaded by Hijos del Nazareno, the multitude of people from various places coming together for the mass and procession is evident. The majority of them remained tightly packed, with hardly any space to spare, during the mass until the start of the procession.
The Black Nazarene is recognized as a sacred image that attracts numerous devotees whenever its procession takes place. Many who journey to Quiapo Church pray for their ailments, while others seek help and miracles from the Lord Nazarene.
Participation in the procession is a tradition that leads to a massive gathering of people, showcasing the strong faith and devotion of Filipinos to the Black Nazarene. Despite the large number of attendees, this did not hinder the devotees from expressing their faith and love for the Lord Nazarene.
The significant turnout of devotees in this year’s Black Nazarene procession attests to the importance of the celebration in the culture and faith of Filipinos. It serves as a demonstration of unity and love for God that continues to thrive in the country.
