In a historic event, Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court Branch 206 granted bail to former Senator Leila de Lima on Monday, November 13, after almost seven years of detention.
According to Atty. Boni Tacardon, De Lima’s lawyer, the bail was granted in the presence of the entire court, marking a stage declaring freedom for De Lima after an extended period of imprisonment.
Muntinlupa RTC Branch 206, led by Judge Gener Gito, overturned the decision of Judge Romeo Buenaventura who denied De Lima’s petition for bail in her latest case related to the illegal drug trade.
With the granting of bail, the door opened for De Lima’s freedom, who continues to face trial for the remaining conspiracy case related to the illegal drug trade. She has also settled in two other cases.
The decision paves the way for a new chapter in De Lima’s life after seven years of incarceration. It carries hope and an opportunity to continue her advocacy and once again be part of society.
Granting bail to De Lima emphasizes the principles of justice and the promotion of human rights. It signifies that even under the custody of justice, there is still an opportunity for a person to be accountable and have a free life while awaiting trial.
Despite the joy of being granted bail, this is not yet the end of De Lima’s journey in her case. However, it is a positive step towards justice and a return to a normal life for the former senator.
