British-Israeli Lawyer Confident in Duterte’s Strong Defense at ICC

British-Israeli lawyer Nicholas Kaufman expressed strong confidence that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will be acquitted of crimes against humanity charges filed before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Kaufman, who is representing Duterte, stated that he is optimistic about the outcome of the case.

“I’m very confident of the strongest defense possible, and I’m very confident that he will be acquitted, indeed, even at the earliest stage possible,” Kaufman said when asked about the likelihood of Duterte’s acquittal.

The ICC is set to hold a confirmation of charges hearing on September 23, 2025, where prosecutors will present evidence to determine whether the case should proceed to trial. Kaufman mentioned that his team is prepared to submit all necessary applications promptly. However, he declined to disclose any details regarding their defense strategy, emphasizing that it would not be appropriate to reveal their approach before the hearing.

“We will submit everything required at the proper time, but I cannot disclose anything about our defense strategy,” Kaufman added.

The case against Duterte stems from his controversial war on drugs, which led to thousands of deaths. Human rights organizations have alleged that many of these killings were extrajudicial, prompting the ICC to investigate Duterte for possible crimes against humanity. Duterte, who maintains that his administration’s anti-drug campaign was lawful and necessary, has repeatedly dismissed the ICC’s jurisdiction over the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Kaufman refused to comment on the reported condition of former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, who was allegedly transported by ambulance to an ICC detention facility. Medialdea’s current health status remains unclear, and Kaufman stressed that it was inappropriate to disclose sensitive information regarding his situation.

As the September 23 hearing approaches, supporters of Duterte remain hopeful that the former president will be cleared of all charges. Duterte’s legal team, led by Kaufman, remains focused on presenting a strong case to challenge the allegations and secure an early acquittal.
