CBCP Official Claims 2022 Elections Results “Slap in Church’s Face”
An official from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) claimed that the results of the 2022 elections are a “slap in the Catholic church’s face”.
Marcelino Antonio Maralit, Bishop of Boac Marinduque and Chairman of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Social Communication, questions the election results for 2022. The important question now, he continued in an interview, is whether the church has truly lost power in influencing Catholics to elect the next leaders.
“What happened to our voice? Is it because we’re not that credible anymore and sometimes it’s very hard and very painful to ask that question but credibility, when it’s a moral choice, is based on your own moral ascendancy,” ani Maralit.
One of the reasons why people no longer listen to the church, according to Maralit, is that they are no longer connected to Christians. The CBCP representative questioned whether individuals are speaking other languages because the church’s message is not reaching them.
“Maybe we still have the morality and the moral ascendancy but our message does not reach the people… maybe we are not speaking the same language,” he said.
“Maybe we have already failed them by not listening to them,” he added. “The election is just a phase of what our people were already telling us. It’s really hard to give your message when the person is already disconnected,” he added.
It should be noted that some members of the Catholic Church have actively supported Vice President Leni Robredo’s campaign. As part of the invitation to her, its campaign vice may be seen going inside churches.
However, President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. defeated it. Bongbong wins by a landslide with over 31 million votes in the 2022 elections.
