CHED Pushes Mandatory Drug Tests Before College Admission
CHED Pushes Mandatory Drug Tests – With the new government’s ‘war on drugs,’ the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has recently pushed a proposal to let all college freshmen undergo drug test first.
“This was born out of the President’s call to make campuses drug-free because we see the pervasive effects of drug use,” said CHED executive director Julito Vitriolo as quoted by GMA News.
According to him, it is important that students won’t use drugs as it will just hinder them in studying. Vitriolo also said that those students who will be tested positive could go through rehabilitation first before admitting to college.
The report added that in some universities, drug testing is already done voluntarily.
One educational institution, STI, said that it has been doing mandatory drug testing for its students for the past five years. And according to its President, Monico Jacob, the mandatory drug testing needs to be done as the “drug menace is real”.
In the report, it said that the said action proposed by CHED was in accordance of President Rodrigo Duterte’s ‘war on drugs wherein the operations with the help of the Philippine National Police has already resulted in about 2,400 lost lives as according to policemen, have fought back forcing the PNP to shoot.
The said action by the Duterte administration has been noticed by United Nations and the United States saying that it is alarming.
PNP Chief Ronaldo “Bato” Dela Rosa, in earlier reports have said that the policemen will continue to reach its target of making the Philippines a “drug-free” country after six months as promised by President Duterte during his electoral campaign.
Will this proposal be implemented all over the country? Will this really help in minimizing or diminishing drugs in the Philippines?
