Congressman Suntay Clarifies Viral Vaping Video: “It’s a Breathing Device, Not a Vape”

Quezon City 4th District Representative Bong Suntay has broken his silence following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing him vaping during a House session on Friday, October 10. The congressman firmly denied the accusation, saying the object he was seen holding was not an electronic cigarette but a breathing exercise device used for relaxation and proper respiration.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Suntay explained that the device “has no chemicals, smoke, or battery, and is not used as a vape or for smoking.” He emphasized that it is a natural and safe breathing aid meant to help users manage stress and promote lung health. “It’s called Breatheasy, and I use it for calming and breathing exercises,” the lawmaker said, addressing the growing public speculation online.

The controversy started when lawyer Atty. Jesus Falcis shared a video clip from the House plenary session, claiming that Suntay appeared to be casually vaping behind Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab, who was then delivering an appeal against budget cuts for Vice President Sara Duterte. Falcis’s post quickly gained traction on social media, drawing mixed reactions from netizens — some criticizing Suntay for “unprofessional behavior,” while others questioned the validity of the claim.

Suntay, however, called for fairness and understanding, saying that the video was taken out of context. “People were quick to assume without knowing the facts,” he wrote. “What I use helps me breathe better during long hours of session, especially when stress levels are high.”

He also reiterated his commitment to maintaining professionalism in Congress and clarified that he respects House rules prohibiting smoking or vaping in session halls. “I would never violate those regulations,” he said. “The device is purely for health purposes.”

As of Saturday, the viral clip continues to circulate on various social media platforms, with supporters of Suntay defending his explanation while critics remain skeptical. The congressman said he hopes the clarification “puts the issue to rest” so the focus can return to “more important legislative matters.”

The incident has since sparked online discussions about responsible social media use and the importance of verifying facts before spreading accusations.
