A group of approximately 100 individuals assembled at the EDSA Shrine in Pasig City on Tuesday, though the purpose of their gathering and their leader’s identity remained unclear.
Rector Rev. Fr. Jerome Secillano shared details of the event through a Facebook post, noting that the group arrived as early as 6 a.m. “for reasons only known to them, and for some, unknown to them.” Despite the ambiguity, they were warmly welcomed into the Shrine and joined the 7:00 a.m. mass.
Fr. Secillano explained that the attendees opted to stay within the Shrine’s premises throughout the day. They later participated in the 12:15 p.m. mass as well, continuing their quiet presence. “They were accommodated and not shooed away,” Secillano wrote, emphasizing that the Shrine remained a place of prayer and worship.
However, he clarified that certain rules were enforced to maintain the sanctity of the location. Activities such as eating, drinking, carrying slogans, shouting, vlogging, sleeping, making noise, debating, or loitering near the Shrine’s doors were prohibited. “The latter will give the impression to mass-goers, pilgrims, and devotees that the Shrine is not available for worship and prayer,” Secillano noted.
The rector underscored the importance of decorum, describing the Shrine as a sacred space and a repository of the Blessed Sacrament. “We insist that proper decorum be practiced in this sacred place… The Church won’t tolerate any unruly behavior and untoward activities that may compromise the sanctity and dignity of the House of God,” he warned.
The event drew additional attention as Sonshine Media Network Inc. (SMNI), a media network known for its loyalty to the Duterte family, live-streamed the gathering. The broadcast has fueled speculation about the purpose of the gathering, though no official statements have clarified the intentions of those present.
While the Shrine provided shelter and an environment conducive to prayer, the unusual assembly left many wondering about its underlying motive. Local authorities and church leaders have yet to determine if the gathering signals a broader movement or a simple act of devotion by those involved.
The situation at the EDSA Shrine continues to be monitored for further developments.
