A viral post has been circulating online, featuring social media personality Deo Balbuena, also known as “Diwata,” dancing at a Zumba event with seemingly incorrect steps. The post’s caption read: “Ano ang gagawin nito sa kongreso? Ginagamit lang siya ng kontratista sa DPWH at may-ari ng mining corporation na nasa likod ng party list nya.” The caption alludes to allegations that Diwata is being used by powerful individuals for their own interests, specifically by a contractor in the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the owner of a mining corporation backing the party list he represents.
On Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Diwata filed his Certificate of Nomination and Acceptance (CONA) as the fourth nominee on the Vendors Party-list. This party-list is focused on advocating for the rights and welfare of street vendors across the Philippines. The filing took place at the Manila Hotel Tent City, where Diwata was accompanied by party leaders Malu Lipana and Lorenz Pesigan.
During an interview with the media, Diwata emphasized the party-list’s commitment to helping Filipino vendors. “Magtatayo [tayo] ng kooperatiba kung saan hindi mahihirapan lumapit ang maninindang Pilipino. ‘Yung mga walang puwesto tutulungan namin makakuha abot sa kanilang makakaya,” Diwata explained. He stressed the importance of creating cooperatives that would make it easier for street vendors to access resources and support.
When asked how he plans to balance his time between his viral food business, Diwata Pares Overload, and legislative work, he assured the public that he has trusted companions who will manage the store in his absence. He even joked about the possibility of offering unlimited Pares and free soft drinks in Congress, saying, “Ay bakit hindi? Kung gusto nila. Magu-unli rice tayo at free softdrinks pa.”
