Philippine Jeepneys To Phase Out In Upcoming Years, Ordered By DOTr

LTFRB To Phase Out Philippine Jeepneys In Upcoming Years

Department of Transportation (DOTr) pushes Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to phase out Philippine jeepneys in upcoming years.

Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) issue an order in 2002 to phase out Philippine Jeepneys for at least 15 years to minimize the pollution and negative effects of old engines in the environment, which will be implemented by LTFRB.

The Philippine jeepney was tagged as “King of the Road”and it is difficult to remove the traditional jeepney from the road because it is already a part of the country’s culture. It will be replaced by electronic one, environment-friendly, and safer version of a jeepney in the future.

The order can’t be implemented immediately without the permission of DOTr, according to LTFRB Public Assistance head Ryan Salvador. Franchise applications of jeepneys will still be accepted by LTFRB for the meantime until a modern public transportation vehicle came out.
