Dr. Willie Ong, a well-known cardiologist and public health advocate, has announced his intention to run for senator in the upcoming 2025 elections. Ong made his announcement via a Facebook video on Monday, September 30, revealing his plans and the unique circumstances surrounding his candidacy.
“Magfa-file po ako for senator. I’ll be filing for senator sa October 2, Wednesday. Nagawa ko na ‘yung papeles, na-notarize ko na. Si Doc Liza, nasa airplane na ngayon… Siya magfa-file ng sa akin, pero ako tatakbo,” Ong declared, sharing that his wife, Dr. Liza Ong, would be filing his candidacy on his behalf as he remains abroad for medical treatment.
Ong, who previously ran for senator in the 2019 midterm elections but did not secure a seat, expressed strong confidence in his chances this time, attributing his faith to divine intervention. “Tatakbo tayo. Ipapakita natin na tunay ang Diyos. This time we’re gonna win this,” he said, showing his optimism despite the challenges.
One of the most striking aspects of Ong’s candidacy is his decision to run without significant financial backing. He emphasized that his campaign would not involve large expenditures, nor would he solicit donations. “Gagastusin natin? Wala. P500,000 lang? Wala… ‘Wag kayo magbigay kahit piso, hindi ko kailangan. Hindi tayo magpapa-under kahit kanino,” Ong stated, affirming that his candidacy would rely on grassroots support and social media.
However, before focusing on his campaign, Ong acknowledges that he faces a personal battle: his health. Currently receiving treatment for sarcoma cancer, he believes that his recovery will be his first miracle. “Pero first miracle, I have to get well. Second miracle, mananalo tayo ng walang pera. Kapag hindi nanalo, edi sorry. Pero I’ll give my best shot,” he candidly shared.
Ong’s health challenges began earlier this year, and he attributes his condition to stress, particularly from the negative comments he encountered on social media. “Saan ko nakuha ‘to? Tingin ko. stress. Kaya kayo ‘wag kayong magbabasa ng comments sa Facebook. Na-stress ako sa mga comments. Na-stress ako sa mga bashers…,” Ong reflected, urging others to be mindful of their mental and emotional well-being.
Despite his ongoing treatment abroad, Dr. Willie Ong remains committed to his senatorial bid, relying on his faith, social media presence, and love for the Filipino people to carry him through.
