Former President Rodrigo Duterte has been appointed as the administrator of all assets owned by pastor Apollo Quiboloy, according to Israelito Torreon, legal counsel of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC). This development comes at a time when the religious organization is facing financial challenges due to the Court of Appeals’ extension of a freeze order on Quiboloy’s bank accounts, real estate, and other properties.
In an interview with The Philippine STAR on Tuesday, Sept. 10, Torreon confirmed Duterte’s role in overseeing Quiboloy’s assets but acknowledged that the KOJC will have to implement strict cost-cutting measures due to the extended freeze. “Yes, the former president (Duterte) is now the administrator of those assets, but the KOJC has to do some belt-tightening measures because of the freeze order,” Torreon stated.
The Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) requested the freeze order, which was initially imposed for 20 days on Aug. 7 by the Court of Appeals. The court extended the freeze until Feb. 6, 2025, following an Aug. 20 ruling. The extension comes amid ongoing investigations into allegations of sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and financial smuggling against Quiboloy and four others.
The freeze order affects 10 of Quiboloy’s bank accounts held with Banco de Oro and Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co., as well as seven real estate properties in Davao del Norte, Davao City, Davao Oriental, Mati, and Roxas City. Additionally, it encompasses assets belonging to the KOJC, Sonshine Media Network International, and 10 other individuals linked to the alleged illegal activities.
The financial restrictions threaten to disrupt the operations of KOJC’s church, its educational institutions including Jose Maria College and its law school, as well as the ongoing construction of the 75,000-seater Kingdome. KOJC is now facing significant operational challenges due to the lack of available funding.
Meanwhile, Quiboloy, along with co-accused Ingrid Canada, Cresente Canada, Jacklyn Roy, and Sylvia Cemanes, was transported to Manila on Sept. 8 after negotiations between KOJC board members and the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP) led to their surrender. Quiboloy’s legal team is currently seeking the transfer of the accused from the PNP custodial center to ISAFP’s detention facility.
Duterte has not yet released a statement regarding his appointment as the administrator of Quiboloy’s assets.
