After the May 9, 2016 elections, the public saw Duterte weep unabashedly before his parents’ tombs, after initial election results showed him leading the presidential race.

The mayor, who is known to be close to his mother Soledad, asked for her help on leading the country, as the highest official.

At that time, he was accompanied to the cemetery by his partner Honeylet Avanceña and their daughter Veronica.

On the video, Duterte went to the Wireless Cemetery at 3 a.m. and stood before the tombs of his father Vicente and mother Soledad before bending over his mother’s tomb to cry.

Duterte has said he has long wanted to cry but he was very busy campaigning, and found no time.

The former mayor of Davao City also lit candles at his parents’ tombs before he greeted the residents living nearby who were there.

Duterte visited the cemetery to pay respects to his parents after a television interview with Pastor Apollo Quiboloy of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name church founded in Davao.

On Monday, October 31, a television report quoted Salvacion Tolosa-Capitan, officer-in-charge of the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Davao City, said Duterte religiously visits his deceased parents, Vicente and Soledad, every All Saints’ Day.

According to him, Duterte also pays a visit to the cemetery during his parents’ birthdays, death anniversaries, and before and after voting in elections.
