Education Secretary Sonny Angara addressed the public on Thursday, July 25, 2024, regarding the impact of Typhoon Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon on public schools. In light of the severe disruptions caused by these weather events, Angara confirmed that schools heavily affected by the typhoon and monsoon will not be compelled to start classes on the scheduled opening day for the school year 2024-2025, which is set for July 29.
Angara acknowledged the extensive damage inflicted on several educational institutions and recognized that the priority for these schools is to ensure a safe and clean environment before welcoming students. “Some schools will really have to postpone their openings kasi maraming aayusin at lilinisin,” Angara stated, emphasizing that the Department of Education (DepEd) is aware of the logistical and structural challenges faced by these institutions. He reassured the public that no school severely affected by the calamity would be pressured to begin classes under difficult circumstances.
While schools experiencing significant damage will be granted an extension, those with minimal impact from the typhoon and monsoon will be expected to commence their academic year as planned. Angara’s statement reflects the government’s commitment to flexibility and support in the face of natural disasters, ensuring that educational institutions can adequately prepare for the return of students.
The DepEd is coordinating with local authorities to assess the condition of affected schools and to facilitate necessary repairs and cleanups. The department has also issued guidelines to ensure that schools can report their readiness to open, allowing for a smooth transition back to normalcy.
Angara highlighted that the well-being of students and staff is a top priority. “Hindi namin pipilitin yung mga nasalanta talaga at mahihirapan sa school opening ng Lunes,” he said, reinforcing the department’s stance on accommodating the needs of schools affected by the disaster.
This measure is part of a broader response by the government to ensure that education continues with minimal disruption despite the challenges posed by recent severe weather conditions. The DepEd’s proactive approach aims to support affected schools and communities, ensuring that students can return to a safe and functional learning environment when conditions permit.
