Iloilo Calls For State Of Calamity Due To The Worsening Effects Of El Niño Phenomenon
The whole Iloilo province was put under the state of calamity after 81, 592 metric tons and 32,800 hectares of farmlands have been destroyed due to the worsening El Niño phenomenon.
The Provincial Board had declared the state of calamity in the whole province after the special session held last Friday which was approved by the Provincial Board Member June Mondejar and Jerry Bionat, the Executive Director of Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council . And because of this, they make use of the P33.7 million emergency fund of Iloilo Task Force El Niño to lessen the prolong period of drought and to prioritized the towns that were severely affected by the El Niño.
According to the PDRRMC, the town of Bingawan was the first to declare the state of calamity, followed by Calinog, Dingle, Estancia, Miag-ao, and Sta. Barbara because of losing water supply, and the severe effect of drought to the Agricultural sector.
Iloilo Provincial Agriculturist Ildefonso Toledo said that there are 81,592.62 metric tones of rice equivalent to P1 million of farmer’s yields.
Including to the declaration in the state of calamity, Iloilo Vice Governor Raul Tupas warned that the politics should not mix the distribution of calamity funds to the affected towns of Iloilo especially in this election time.
