Filipinos Advised to Avoid Travel to Iraq Due to Rising Tensions

The Philippine Embassy in Baghdad has issued a strong travel advisory urging all Filipinos to avoid unnecessary travel to Iraq due to the “prevailing security situation in the region.” The warning was released on Thursday, June 12, as tensions continue to mount between Israel and Iran, raising concerns about the potential for widespread violence across the Middle East.

According to the embassy, the situation remains volatile and unpredictable, with heightened threats to safety in Iraq and surrounding countries. “Filipinos are advised to defer non-essential travel to Iraq and to remain vigilant at all times,” the advisory stated. The embassy also encouraged Filipinos currently residing in Iraq to register with the embassy and update their contact details for possible emergency assistance.

This alert comes shortly after a report from CBS News revealed that U.S. officials have been briefed about a possible Israeli military operation targeting Iran. The United States reportedly expects Iran to retaliate—likely by targeting U.S. installations in Iraq. This potential scenario has raised fears of escalating conflict in Iraqi territory, where thousands of foreign nationals, including Filipinos, are currently working.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Manila echoed the embassy’s advisory, urging overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families to monitor developments closely. “The safety of our kababayans is our top priority,” the DFA stated. “We are prepared to assist and repatriate Filipinos should the situation further deteriorate.”

Over 4,000 Filipinos live and work in Iraq, primarily in the construction, healthcare, and service sectors. Many are employed inside international compounds, oil fields, and U.S. military bases—locations that could become targets if hostilities break out.

In light of the advisory, several Filipino families with members in Iraq have expressed concern. “We are worried about my brother, who is working near Baghdad,” said a woman interviewed by local news outlets. “We just want him home safe.”

The Philippine government continues to monitor the regional developments closely and has assured the public that contingency plans are in place. Filipinos in Iraq are advised to stay in contact with the embassy and follow local security advisories. For urgent matters, the embassy’s 24/7 emergency hotline remains operational.
