Amidst the heated discussions surrounding the Jeepney Modernization program, a new offer is giving hope to jeepney drivers and operators. This is the electric jeepney being prepared by former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis Chavit Singson starting March 2024.
Despite the objections and concerns of drivers and operators regarding the modernization program, Singson launched a solution that not only addresses the government’s requirements but also the needs of transportation workers. According to him, this electric jeepney complies with the standards of the PUV Modernization Program.
The unique feature of this offer is the no-down-payment and zero-interest scheme offered to interested drivers and operators. Through this method, the aim is to provide Filipino jeepney drivers with an opportunity to start a business with lower financial burdens.
Currently, Singson is coordinating with various transport groups such as the League of Transportation and Operators in the Philippines (LTOPF), ALTODAP, PASANG Masda, and others. His goal is to collaborate and provide information to these groups to successfully implement the project.
In Singson’s plan, it is expected that the first batch of 100,000 e-jeeps will be distributed to Filipino jeepney drivers in March. These electric jeeps were initially manufactured in South Korea, but there are plans to establish a local factory in the Philippines to strengthen local production and provide jobs to Filipinos.
The offer by former Gov. Singson opens up new opportunities for jeepney drivers and operators amidst the modernization program. By strengthening infrastructure for project implementation and through the financial assistance provided with no down payment and zero interest, Filipinos are hopeful for a smoother and more sustainable public transportation system.
