Gabriela’s side over Duterte’s catcalling to Mariz Umali

Gabriela has aired its side over the catcalling of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to GMA News anchor and reporter Mariz Umali during a press conference in Davao City on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

Gabriela partylist Rep. Emmi de Jesus described the reported catcalling of Duterte to the veteran journalist as “uncalled for”.

In a phone interview of Abante.com.ph with De Jesus, she admitted that she was dismayed with Duterte’s behavior and for those who laugh off inside the press conference room.

“Mas na-turn-off ako sa reaction ng mga tao. Bakit kayo nagtawanan, parang naging joke,” De Jesus said noting she will try to talk with the upcoming president to discuss women’s rights.

During the press conference of Duterte last May 31, while Umali was asking a question, the outgoing Davao City mayor went on whistling and even sang to the reporter which amuse the attendees of the press conference

“Pinupuri ko si Mariz because she stand on her ground. Pero hindi dapat nangyari ‘yun dahil ang catcalling ay kulturang matagal na naming ipinaglalaban na baguhin,” De Jesus stated.

The said issue has been the topic during the press conference on the following day but Duterte kept mum and refuse to issue an apology over the incident.

Meanwhile, several journalist have gave their reaction over the catcalling incident of Mariz Umali.

Umali herself had earlier aired her statement on the controversy. Her husband Raffy Tima also gave his sentiments with regards to the reported catcalling. Fellow journalist Cesar Apolinario Jr. earlier gave his insight to the issue.
