Government Set to Boost Senior and PWD Discounts to P500 Monthly by March

House Speaker Martin Romualdez announced on Wednesday that senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) are poised to receive an increased monthly discount of up to P500 on groceries and essential commodities starting next month. Currently capped at P260 per month, this hike comes as a welcome relief to vulnerable groups amid economic challenges.

According to Romualdez, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is spearheading the initiative to augment the discounts available to the elderly and PWDs. DTI Undersecretary Carolina Sanchez revealed plans to potentially double the existing discount from the usual P65 per week to P125.

Sanchez further disclosed that a joint issuance involving the DTI, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Energy will be released to formalize the implementation of the increased discount. This collaborative effort underscores the government’s commitment to supporting marginalized sectors by alleviating their financial burdens.

The expanded discount coverage encompasses a wide range of basic goods and prime commodities essential for daily sustenance. Items such as rice, bread, meat, fish, eggs, and cooking oil, among others, will be eligible for the discount, ensuring that seniors and PWDs can access nutritious food items without straining their budgets.

Moreover, the discount extension encompasses manufactured goods like processed meat, sardines, and corned beef, catering to diverse dietary preferences and nutritional needs. Additionally, basic construction supplies such as cement, hollow blocks, and electrical supplies, including light bulbs, will also be subject to discounted rates, facilitating essential household maintenance and repairs.

However, it’s important to note that premium brands and non-essential food items like cakes and pastries will not be eligible for the increased discount. This strategic exclusion aims to prioritize essential purchases and prevent potential abuse of the discount system while ensuring its sustainability.

The move to enhance senior and PWD discounts reflects the government’s proactive stance in addressing socio-economic disparities and promoting inclusivity. By bolstering support for vulnerable demographics, policymakers aim to foster a more equitable society where every citizen can lead a dignified and fulfilling life.

As the implementation date approaches, stakeholders anticipate the positive impact of these measures on the well-being and livelihoods of senior citizens and PWDs across the nation. Through concerted efforts and targeted interventions, the government continues to champion the welfare of its most vulnerable constituents, embodying its commitment to serve the people with compassion and integrity.
