House Extends Kiko Barzaga Suspension for 60 Days Over Ethics Case

The House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to extend the suspension of Cavite 4th District Representative Kiko Barzaga for another 60 days without pay and allowances, following the recommendation of its Committee on Ethics and Privileges.

During the plenary session, lawmakers approved the committee’s findings and recommendations with 238 members voting in favor and 10 opposing the measure. Representatives from the Bagong Henerasyon and Kamanggagawa party-list groups were among those who voted against the suspension. Meanwhile, nine lawmakers chose to abstain from the vote.

The decision marks Barzaga’s second suspension as the House continues to examine issues surrounding his conduct and compliance with internal investigations. The ethics panel submitted its recommendation just minutes before the plenary vote, citing Barzaga’s failure to attend committee meetings scheduled to address new allegations filed against him.

According to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Barzaga repeatedly failed to appear in hearings despite receiving formal notices. The panel noted that his absence hindered the committee’s efforts to clarify and resolve the accusations, which they described as serious and requiring his direct participation.

Barzaga’s suspension stems from statements he made accusing some of his former colleagues in the National Unity Party of accepting bribes from shipping magnate Enrique Razon during the July 2025 speakership contest. The leadership race ultimately resulted in Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez securing the position of House Speaker.

The ethics panel has not yet released detailed findings regarding the truthfulness of Barzaga’s allegations. However, lawmakers stressed that the sanction is primarily related to his refusal to cooperate with the investigation rather than the substance of his claims.

House leaders emphasized that attendance in ethics proceedings is a responsibility expected from all members, especially when they are involved in allegations that may affect the credibility and integrity of the institution. They added that disciplinary measures are necessary to maintain order and accountability within the chamber.

The extended suspension means Barzaga will remain barred from participating in House sessions, committee hearings, and official legislative duties for the duration of the penalty. He will also continue to lose salary and allowances during the suspension period.

As of posting time, Barzaga has yet to release a new public statement addressing the latest decision of the House. The development adds another chapter to the ongoing political tensions linked to the 2025 speakership race and internal party conflicts within the chamber.
