The House impeachment prosecutors are gearing up to subpoena Vice President Sara Duterte’s bank records to bolster their case once the Senate impeachment trial begins. The trial could convene in June, four months after the articles of impeachment were transmitted to the Senate.
Manila 3rd District Representative Joel Chua emphasized the necessity of gathering comprehensive evidence. “The impeachment process allows us to complete the evidence to support our case, and that includes subpoenaing financial records if necessary through the Senate impeachment court,” Chua stated. He pointed out that the Bank Secrecy Law provides an exception for impeachment cases, which will allow the prosecution to access relevant financial documents.
To ensure a solid case, the House prosecution team is actively reviewing existing evidence, collecting additional documents, coordinating with financial agencies, and identifying key witnesses. These steps underscore the gravity of the charges and the commitment to conducting a thorough investigation.
The Senate impeachment trial is expected to begin in June, once Congress resumes its sessions. Senate President Francis Escudero has stressed the importance of avoiding a repeat of the stalled 2001 impeachment proceedings that led to massive protests and the resignation of a president. He assured the public that steps are being taken to maintain “the credibility and impartiality of the impeachment court,” ensuring that all parties will have the opportunity to present their cases fairly.
Vice President Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on charges including conspiracy to assassinate the president, large-scale corruption, and failing to oppose China’s actions in the South China Sea. More than 215 legislators backed the impeachment, leading to its swift transmission to the Senate. However, critics argue that the Senate’s delay in commencing the trial hinders accountability.
