Jinggoy Estrada Rejects Nicolas Torre III as New PNP Chief

Senator Jinggoy Estrada expressed strong disapproval over the appointment of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Chief Nicolas Torre III as the incoming head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), calling the choice “arrogant” and “not good.”

In a radio interview aired on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Estrada did not mince words in criticizing Torre’s demeanor and suitability for the top police post.

“For me, kung ako ang tatanungin, that’s not a good choice. Ngayon lang tayo magkakaroon ng napakaaroganteng Chief PNP,” the senator remarked bluntly.

The comment comes just days after Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin officially confirmed Torre’s appointment, following the mandatory retirement of current PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil.

When asked about his expectations for Torre’s leadership, Estrada replied with uncertainty. “I do not know. That remains to be seen. If he will continue his arrogant ways in governing the police force, I don’t know what will happen.”

Despite his criticisms, Estrada acknowledged that Torre had earned the trust of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., but warned the new PNP Chief not to squander that confidence.

“May tiwala sa kaniya ang Pangulo, so be it. Eh ‘di sana mag-perform siya na maganda. Sana huwag n’ya sirain yung pagtitiwala ng Pangulo sa kaniya,” Estrada said.

Torre, known for his high-profile operations and firm leadership style at CIDG, has been a controversial figure among some lawmakers and police insiders. His assertive approach to law enforcement has been praised by some sectors, but others, like Estrada, see it as excessive and off-putting.

The appointment of Torre comes at a time when the PNP faces public pressure to address rising crime rates and improve internal discipline. Whether Torre’s leadership style will align with those expectations remains uncertain.

As the new PNP Chief prepares to take office, eyes will be on how he handles the criticism and whether he can translate the president’s trust into effective police reform, without alienating key allies in government.

His official assumption of duty is expected shortly after Gen. Marbil’s retirement in June.

  1. I think senator estrada should differentiate arrogance from “duty first” attitude. Walang sinasanto c general torre. That’s what we need. For me, ut’s a good choice. For those who needs padrino, they worry. Right?
