Recently, we reported on a unique singing contest called the “Libagon Singing Contest” in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental. In this contest, instead of having skilled participants, the contestants were tone-deaf. This may be the first-ever singing contest where tone-deaf individuals participated.
Filipinos are known for their love of singing, and it’s common to have videoke sessions on various occasions. However, most videoke sessions focus on showcasing good singing voices, and the same goes for well-known singing contests and reality singing competitions where the prize money for winners can reach millions.
A few months ago, Vice Mayor Miguel “Migz” Zayco announced the “Libagon Singing Contest.” He invited anyone interested to submit their singing videos and the criteria for the contest were also posted. In recent days, a winner was announced – Rona Gustilo, a 29-year-old overseas Filipino worker from Brgy Linao, Kabankalan City. She won 5,000 pesos along with a trophy. Rona expressed her happiness with her achievement, saying, “I am happy because, of course, I won. I’m happy because it’s my first time joining a singing contest. I didn’t expect to do well here.” There are videos available where you can see other entries in the contest.
In the midst of the challenges we face, this serves as evidence of our creative thinking and the resilient spirit of the Filipino people.
