Labor Group Slams P31 Additional Wage Increase in Central Visayas
A labor group from Cebu slammed the P31 additional wage increase in Central Visayas claiming it is a “huge insult” to employees.
A labor group from Cebu, the Alyansa sa mga Mamumuo sa Sugbo – Kilusang Mayo Uno (AMA Subgo – KMU), is protesting the P31 wage hike in Central Visayas. The pay increase, according to the group, is an insult to workers because it is smaller than increases in other provinces.
The announcement came after the Central Visayas Wage Board authorized a P31 increase in the region’s basic salary. This is lower than the salary hikes in Western Visayas, which were fixed at P55 and P110, respectively.
“Does our wage board mean to say that basic goods are cheaper here in Cebu than in Western Visayas? This is a huge insult to the workers who know the real prices and the expensiveness of consumer goods here in the region, so much so that the minimum wage is not enough,” said AMA Subgo – KMU in a statement.
The minimum wage in Central Visayas is currently P435. Meanwhile, the association emphasized that implementing the P750 national minimum wage will benefit workers.
They claimed that workers may “live with dignity” on the P750 minimum wage, especially given the country’s escalating prices of basic commodities and services. They noted that the government should have listened to the long-standing clamor for a P750 national minimum wage, not the interests of big enterprises.
