Larry Gadon Regrets Supporting Dutertes

Controversial former lawyer Larry Gadon has publicly expressed regret over his previous support for the Duterte family, particularly Vice President Sara Duterte. In a scathing statement, Gadon accused Duterte of actions unbecoming of her position, citing an alleged “kill plot” and her use of expletives against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his family members.

Gadon, who himself was disbarred in July 2023 for repeatedly using foul language and exhibiting misconduct, filed a formal petition before the Supreme Court seeking to disbar Duterte. He claims that her actions have severely tarnished the dignity of the legal profession.

According to Gadon, Duterte’s alleged remarks and actions demonstrate a lack of moral fitness to continue practicing law. “Her expletive-laden tirades and purported plotting are clear violations of the ethical standards required of lawyers,” Gadon asserted in a press briefing.

The former lawyer pointed to specific instances where Duterte allegedly displayed misconduct, including public criticisms of Marcos Jr. and what he described as “divisive behavior that undermines the integrity of national leadership.”

Gadon emphasized that his decision to file the disbarment case was not motivated by personal grievances but by his desire to uphold the rule of law. “I regret supporting the Dutertes in the past. It is my moral duty to ensure that those in positions of power are held accountable,” he said.

The Vice President has yet to issue an official statement regarding the disbarment petition, but her spokesperson dismissed Gadon’s accusations as baseless and politically motivated. They characterized Gadon as a “disgraced figure” whose actions reflect his desperation for relevance.

Gadon’s filing comes amid increasing scrutiny of Duterte’s leadership style and decisions. Critics have often highlighted her controversial statements and actions as polarizing, though her supporters argue that these reflect her strong leadership qualities.

This legal move against Duterte could add to her growing list of challenges as Vice President and as a prominent public figure. Analysts suggest that the case may also reignite discussions about the ethical responsibilities of public officials who are members of the legal profession.

Whether the Supreme Court will act on Gadon’s petition remains to be seen. However, the case underscores ongoing political tensions within the Philippine government and among its prominent leaders.
