Loud Sky Explosion Startles Palawan Residents Amid China’s Rocket Launch

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan — A powerful explosion in the sky startled residents across Puerto Princesa and several municipalities in Palawan on Sunday, raising widespread alarm and speculation among the public.

Palawan Explosion

The sudden loud bang, which was both heard and seen by locals, sparked numerous social media posts, with many asking, “Did you hear that loud explosion?” and sharing videos of what appeared to be a bright flash in the sky followed by a thunderous sound.

Coincidentally, August 4 marks the scheduled launch of China’s Long March 12 rocket from the Hainan International Commercial Launch Center. According to the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), the rocket’s debris was expected to fall in designated drop zones — one of which includes the waters off Puerto Princesa and other parts of Palawan.

While it has not yet been officially confirmed whether the reported explosion is connected to the Long March 12 launch, the timing and location have fueled speculation. Authorities are currently verifying if any debris entered Philippine territory or caused the observed disturbance.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) MIMAROPA also acknowledged the rocket launch, reiterating PhilSA’s earlier advisory that the debris may pose risks to maritime navigation and coastal communities. No damage or injuries have been reported so far.

PhilSA and local government units have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any sightings of foreign objects or falling debris.

As of this writing, no official confirmation has been made linking the explosion directly to the Chinese rocket. Investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, residents continue to share firsthand accounts of the incident, waiting for further clarification from space and disaster authorities.
