Madriaga Seeks Protection After Revealing Duterte Fund Source

Jailed informant Ramil Madriaga, who recently made explosive claims regarding Vice President Sara Duterte’s 2022 campaign funding, has reached out to Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Representative Leila de Lima seeking help against alleged “harassment.”

According to his lawyer, Raymund Palad, Madriaga sent a letter to Rep. De Lima on November 17, pleading for assistance. Madriaga, who is currently detained, has been described as an alleged “bagman” for the Vice President. He gained notoriety after submitting an affidavit detailing the alleged sources of funding for VP Duterte’s 2022 electoral bid. In his affidavit, Madriaga claimed that the campaign war chest was bolstered by funds originating from POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators) operators and known drug dealers. This serious accusation has sent ripples through the political landscape, demanding rigorous scrutiny and investigation.

Madriga to De Lima

Rep. De Lima confirmed that she met with Madriaga on December 8. Following their meeting, De Lima disclosed that Madriaga asserted he possessed tangible evidence to substantiate the explosive allegations contained within his affidavit. This claim suggests that the former alleged “bagman” is prepared to back up his statement with proof, potentially escalating the gravity of the situation and the scrutiny facing the current administration.

Madriaga to De Lima

The former senator, who herself has faced significant legal and political challenges, is now positioned as a potential ally for Madriaga. His decision to appeal to De Lima, a staunch political opponent of the current Vice President’s allies, underscores the seriousness of his situation and his perceived need for high-profile political protection. His legal counsel’s statement about the supposed “harassment” further emphasizes the tense environment surrounding his revelations. The unfolding scenario raises critical questions about political accountability, campaign finance transparency, and the protection of witnesses who come forward with information on high-level corruption. The public now awaits the next steps from both Madriaga’s legal team and Rep. De Lima regarding the nature of the evidence and the action she may take to address the alleged harassment.
