As Saturday afternoon, December 16, passed, the ground in Surigao del Sur was jolted by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake, according to the report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to Phivolcs’ records, this tremor had a tectonic origin and occurred around 5:12 in the afternoon. It is noteworthy that the epicenter was located 30 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, with a depth of 23 kilometers.
Phivolcs stated that this earthquake is considered an aftershock of a stronger magnitude 7.4 earthquake that occurred off the coast of Surigao del Sur on December 2, 2023. Although it raised concerns about the safety of the area, the agency assured that no further aftershocks are expected from this event.
Despite this occurrence, Phivolcs does not anticipate significant damage or adverse effects on the health and safety of residents in the province.
