Amai Manabilang, Lanao del Sur – A magnitude 4.4 earthquake shook the town of Amai Manabilang, Lanao del Sur, at 4:10 PM on Saturday, August 31, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers from its origin, located at 07.78°N, 124.68°E, 24 kilometers west of Amai Manabilang. The earthquake had a tectonic origin, meaning it was caused by the movement of tectonic plates beneath the earth’s surface. This type of earthquake typically results from the shifting and tension of forces in the ground, leading to sudden movements.
Currently, no widespread damage is expected from this earthquake. A magnitude of 4.4 is considered moderate and typically does not cause severe damage to structures, especially modern buildings constructed according to earthquake-resilient standards. However, Phivolcs is monitoring for any possible aftershocks, though their report indicates that no aftershocks are anticipated.
Experts believe this earthquake is a normal occurrence in the region, which, while not expected to cause significant damage, demonstrates the natural dynamics of the Earth’s crust. Amai Manabilang, located in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), experiences less seismic activity compared to other parts of the country, making it more likely for residents to remain safe from such earthquakes.
So far, no reports of injuries or casualties have been received as a result of the earthquake. Local officials and government representatives have reassured the public that there is no need for concern regarding this event. However, Phivolcs continues to remind the public to be prepared for any potential disaster and to follow safety guidelines and advice.
Meanwhile, residents of Amai Manabilang conducted a quick assessment of their properties to ensure no damage was caused by the earthquake. According to reports, the earthquake did not damage any structures, and no evacuation was necessary. Schools and public buildings have not reported any collapses or damage.
Phivolcs reminds the public to remain cautious and not to fall for misinformation that may circulate on social media. Everyone is encouraged to obtain information only from official sources such as Phivolcs and local government units.
Despite the earthquake, the community of Amai Manabilang remains resilient and continues to thrive as a safe and orderly place for its residents.
