Magnitude 4.5 Earthquake Hits Davao Occidental: Phivolcs Assures No Aftershocks or Damage Expected

In a seismic event that occurred on Friday morning, January 12, the province of Davao Occidental experienced a magnitude 4.5 earthquake, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to the Phivolcs report, the tectonic-origin earthquake took place around 10:05 in the morning. The epicenter was identified at a distance of 97 kilometers southeast of Sarangani Island in the municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, with a depth of 3 kilometers.

Fortunately, the Phivolcs do not anticipate any aftershocks resulting from the earthquake. Additionally, they do not expect any significant damage from the seismic activity.

The seismic disturbance was felt in various areas within Davao Occidental, prompting concern among residents. However, the relatively low magnitude and the remote location of the epicenter contribute to the assurance from Phivolcs that aftershocks and damages are unlikely.

It’s noteworthy that Sarangani Island is known for its seismic activity, being situated near tectonic plate boundaries. The occurrence of earthquakes in this region is not uncommon, and the local government and residents are generally prepared for such events.

Phivolcs

The Phivolcs, as the government agency responsible for monitoring and studying earthquakes and volcanic activities in the Philippines, promptly disseminated information about the earthquake to keep the public informed and to avoid unnecessary panic. The agency continues to closely monitor the situation for any developments.

In the absence of expected aftershocks and damage, residents are urged to remain vigilant but reassured that there is no imminent threat. Local authorities may conduct further assessments to ensure the safety of structures and infrastructure in the affected areas.

Preparedness measures, such as conducting drills and disseminating earthquake safety information, play a crucial role in minimizing the potential impact of seismic events. This recent earthquake serves as a reminder for residents in earthquake-prone areas to stay informed, be prepared, and have emergency plans in place.
