Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Jolts Surigao del Sur

On Monday morning, April 1, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the province of Surigao del Sur, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to the Phivolcs report, the earthquake, with a tectonic origin, occurred at around 5:16 a.m.

The epicenter was located approximately 24 kilometers northeast of Lingig, Surigao del Sur, with a depth of 28 kilometers.

Intensity V was reported in Lingig and Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, while Intensity IV was recorded in the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur, and Intensity III in Boston, Davao Oriental.

Instrumental Intensities were also noted in the following areas:

Intensity III – City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro

Intensity I – City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur

Although Phivolcs did not anticipate aftershocks from the earthquake, it is expected to cause damage.
