A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of San Francisco, Southern Leyte, on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed. The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) and was classified as a shallow quake, which typically poses a higher risk of damage.
Affected Areas and Intensities
The earthquake was felt across several provinces, with varying intensities reported:

PHIVOLCS has cautioned residents to remain vigilant, warning of potential aftershocks and structural damage in the affected areas. No tsunami warning was issued.
Earthquake Preparedness
The Philippines, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent seismic activity due to its proximity to major tectonic boundaries. Local authorities have urged residents to review earthquake safety protocols and secure loose items in their homes.
Historical Context
Earthquakes of this magnitude are not uncommon in the region, highlighting the importance of disaster preparedness. As the country continues to improve its response systems, ensuring public awareness remains a top priority.
Further updates will be provided as authorities assess the situation. Residents are advised to follow official announcements from PHIVOLCS and local government units.
